Douglas knows his horrors (he's also Carlos Clarens, author of "An Illustrated History of Horror and Science Fiction Films")-- and this book lays out in detail the backgrounds and histories of the legends and myths concerning vampires, zombies, werewolves, mummies, and "creatures" such as Frankenstein's monster and the Golem. It's a bit florid in places (understandably) but chock-full of detail and surprising info on how our boogie men came to be. Hard to find, but worth tracking down if you're doing a paper on such things (try also books by David J. Skal in that case). Enjoyable and informative, especially for the young.

This book has all the essentials you need whether you are an architect, developer, investor, researcher or student. The well documented research done by this group will save you far more than the amount of the cost of this book versus what you would spend doing your own research.

This book is amazing. The text amount is small and the Photographs fill the pages. The photos say more about the diversity of cultures in Houston than words ever could. Great shots of some of our best architecture and landscapes. I highly recommend this one to anyone interested in photography, or in Houston in general.

This powerful book is an indictment of U.S. intervention in Central America. Unlike the numerous accounts of the CIA involvement in the wars against democracy, however, Porpora focuses on American public's reaction - or non-reaction - to the genocidal policies of our "allies" in Central America. He draws strong parallels between the US in the 1980-90's and Germany in the 1920-30's and demonstrates that it is the moral indifference of the general public that allows evil to flourish, and that ultimately it is the general public that is responsible.

This book begins with a dilemma around a group of men, caught in a cave by falling rocks. Starved of food they have to decide whether cannibalism would be acceptable. Douglas argues that there is no universal solution to this dilemma and that the different possible outcomes depend on the instituional relationships among the individuals.

Mary Douglas admits in the early chapters of the text that this is the book she should have written first. Many of her earlier books, including Purity and Danger and Natural Symbols attracted critical acclaim but failed to make her theoretical orientations explicit. Her approach is in a minority position in contemporary social science and is informed by the sociology of Durkheim as practiced in anthropology in the first half of this century.

As with all of her books, HIT is a great pleasure to read and she illuminates critical academic concerns with in a voice that is engaging. The book was written as a response to Olson's 'Logic of Action' and so focuses on demonstrating the contrary position that collective action does have rational foundations.

This is a short text which serves as a useful introduction. It is impossible to understand the breadth of Douglas' profound insights without also reading 'Implicit Meanings', 'Purity and Danger' and 'Risk and Blame'.

This book is one of the best examinations both of the translation of the i ching, but also of it's historical perspective. I have an old copy which I have used for years. This is a must have for anyone wishing to consult the i ching

If you read only one book, follow only one trainers advice, this is the one. He taught Tom Hopkins!! Whether beginner or pro, his advice will be worth thousand. I didn't come online to write a review, I got on line to find a copy of his cassette tapes. I had a set back in 1982, he was my first trainer/mentor. I had loaned the tapes and never got them back. If you have the patience to go through a loved ones mail, keep track of all the phone calls and paper work, this book is for you. Instead of paying an attorney thousands of dollars to do "paperwork" this book will guide you through the tedious probate process. Even if you make a mistake, the court will let you know what was incorrect. (The courts paralegal may even assist you at no charge.) You can then go back to the book and correct the error and resubmit your paperwork. Think about it... you will have to provide an attorney with the loved ones documents and then the attorney gets paid to fill in the blanks. But if YOU file for probate, you can be fully in charge, keep track of information and keep the money the attorney probably has a paralegal prepare. This book is easy to follow and well worth the investment. This book can not be rated high enough.
